I decided I needed to deck out my work laptop! I found these little guys on Google- their original Tumblr page couldn't be found.

Dice Case: A Dungeons and Dragons Christmas Gift

To my surprise, I was having a very difficult time picking out a Christmas gift for Kareshi. I could think of 1,000 things he would love to have, but none of them felt like the "right" gift for him.

This is what I finally came up with:

A set of Game Science's "high precision" gaming dice, with a customized dice box.

The idea came to me shortly after Thanksgiving. I found the dice set on ThinkGeek, one of my favorite online stores. I sketched rough plans and e-mailed them to my dad. When I got home, we talked through the plans and finalized the design.

We chose to use red oak for the box and walnut for the interior.

After collecting all the materials, the next step, of course, is getting the wood to be the correct size.

We then glued the pieces together to create a complete box. Once the box had dried, the corners were rounded and the box was cut to make two identical halves.

The next part was making the dividers. This was the most challenging part to me. My father had a pretty good idea of how he thought we should do this, but I was totally lost. He had to redo a lot of my work. I am thankful he is patient with me!

We sized and cut strips of wood to fit snugly in our box halves. 

The main tool used to create the notches was the table saw. Now, I don't know technical terms at all, so please bare with me on this explanation. Each of the slots are one inch, so the notches has to be in one inch increments. We put a piece of wood against the fence so that when the wood was pushed against it, the blade would hit at exactly one inch.

Each notch took a little over two and a half cuts.

The wood burning was my favorite step. I did a simple border on the top and a to/from on the bottom. 

I then sanded the halves down so everything was flush.

My father chiseled away little groves for the hinges to fit.

Finally, we finished, waxed, and screwed the hinges and latch on the box.

I am so happy with how this turned out! I also laid some felt in the compartments and sewed a little red pouch to hold the box.

I gave it to Kareshi this morning, and he was speechless! Sometimes, I think dice are the only reason he loves Dungeons and Dragons. XD He loves the dice case and it was totally worth all the work. I cannot wait until we have a chance to play DnD again so he can try them out!

ThinkGeek's Bag of Holding

Skill Check! -d20 Plush-

A couple of weeks ago, I was playing Dungeons and Dragons with some friends of mine. For our first encounter- I was up first, playing a wizard. And being a wizard, I pull out my crossbow, of course, to shoot at the creature before us. XD Preform a skill check- rolled a natural twenty. XD

I rolled THREE other natural twenties that evening. Another guy rolled two. It was just a good night for all of us.

I thought it’d be fun make a plush D20. Plus, if you throw this D20 when a skill check doesn’t go the way you want it to, it won’t hurt anything... or anyone. XD

I based the plush off Evil Mad Scientist's "d20 Handbag of Holding". Link
I used their "large pattern". If you are looking at the pattern, you'll notice there are two different sized triangles for the stiffener pads. I only made one size of triangle.

I made my own stiffener pads by attaching interfacing and heavy weight quilt batting with Loctite general performance spray adhesive.

I used very thin beads of hot glue around the corner of the stiffener pads to attach them to the felt pieces.

I found an old stencil in my main floor craft shelf. It worked pretty well for painting on numbers! I had to wash the stencil in between each number though, otherwise the paint would make too much of a mess.

I'm sorry to say- I lost the pictures I took while sewing the pieces together. I'm very sorry. But how I sewed it together was simple. I used a print-and-fold dice as a guide. Link It took focus, but it really was not hard. Then, I simply stuffed it like you'd stuff any other plushie. XD

The crazy thing- my DM was over to hang out yesterday after I finished this.

He picked it up, rolled, and got a thirteen.

I picked it up, rolled, and got a twenty.

This Is How I Roll

After posting my tutorial yesterday, I decided to make another dice pouch! This one took me about two hours, start to finish.

First, I made the dice pouch just as I did in the tutorial. I stitched the phrase on Aida cloth. Using Heat-N-Bond, I attached it to the pouch and stitched around it. Simple as that!

This is my first tutorial, so please bear with me! I decided to do something simple to start- dice pouches! The necessity (and accessory) for every role-playing gamer!

The more I look at this, the more it looks like a bad 70s how-to book. I’m always open to criticism and ideas for improvement! Also, if you have any suggests for tutorials, I’d love to hear them!
